Flory is a young night fairy no larger than an acorn, who has tragically lost her wings in an accident. Alone and away from her family and other fairies, she must use all of her wits, resolve and magic to survive. Flory ends up living in an abandoned birdhouse in a giant's (human's!) garden. The garden is filled with living creatures and Flory must determine who is friend and who is foe. One of Flory's new friends is a constantly hungry squirrel named Skoggle. Together they scheme to outwit the giant's various bird feeders. Flory dreams of the day she can fly again, and she begins to hatch a plan that involves a small hummingbird.
This short, spare story should appeal to many readers: those that love a good fantasy story, especially a story about a tiny miniature world, and those who enjoy a good animal story. Color illustrations of Flory and her surroundings add to the appeal. Some books to recommend to a reader that loves this story include the classic The Borrowers by Mary Norton, the miniature mystery Masterpiece by Elise Broach and the very funny Nuts to You by Lynne Rae Perkins.
