Beyond The Grinch and The Polar Express....

Try sharing one of these two Christmas books with your elementary school-age reader. Two very different classic stories could very well become a part of your holiday read-aloud tradition. Silver Packages by Cynthia Rylant, is a heart-warming story about a Christmas "train" that comes through a small Appalachian town every year on December 23rd to deliver toys to expectant boys and girls. The gifts are donated by a generous man who has decided to spend his life "giving back." Despite this man's generosity, one boy named Frankie is always just a little bit disappointed he hasn't gotten his dream gift. You and your reader will love this warm and tender story that is loaded with empathy.

If you have not heard of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson, be prepared to LOL. The Herdmans are a big family of cigar-smoking child bullies, and although they know nothing about the story of the birth of Christ, they audition for and win all the prize roles for the town Christmas pageant. Once you read (or listen to) this hilarious classic, you will want to make it a holiday tradition for your family.
